Three Muses - Window

In my part of the world the leaves are falling, and the mornings are crisp. Soon it will be winter, and I'll be like the cardinal......looking to Spring! I think this style is a hold-over from our Rob Gonsalves challenge at our Digitalmania Flickr site last Friday, but I like to put windows in unexpected places. A No Advertising Zone

We have always tried to make "The Three Muses" a friendly place where anything goes - a place for bloggers to post their lovely artwork and a place to make friends. Everyone is welcome and there is definitely no preference as to art styles whether they be mixed media, totally hand-made, digital, cards, stamping, etc. We truly value our regular participants.
The only rules we have are that entries should make some reference to the weekly theme and that our website should not be used for advertising. There is a notice to this effect on our blog.
Unfortunately, any entry which appears to contain product promotion (usually through multiple posting to large numbers of challenges) and/or does not cover the weekly theme will be deleted without discussion.

THREE MUSES - Oriental

The antiquities of China have always fascinated me -- the Great Wall, the ornate temples, and the wonderful terra cotta soldiers, who guarded their emporer for centuries beneath the soil of obscure farms until they were discovered in 1974 when a farmer was digging a well. There are said to be 8,000 life-sized soldiers, 120 chariots, 520 horses, and 150 cavalry horses, many still buried in the three pits that were discovered, still standing guard since about 250 B.C. Amazing!

Well, who would have thought it? When Bev, Marie and I each dipped a tentative toe into the blog challenge world with the creation of the Three Muses who thought we would still be going strong two years later and celebrating our second birthday this week with so many fantastic cyber friends!

Bev, Marie and I started the Three Muses, but you lovely people have embraced it, supported it and made it into the happy and creative meeting place we truly feel it is and we thank you so much.

In her later years, my mother gave me her grandmother's photo album. It was one of those wonderful old leather-bound albums with windowed pages for cabinet card photos. By the time I received it, the pages were tattered and only a few photos remained, all unidentified. The young man above is one of those. I like his earnest expression and square jaw. We share DNA, but I don't know who he is. The benevolent face in the mist behind the Family Record is that of my grandmother. I wish she had written his name on the back of his photo!

Three Muses - Book

Books are nearly always among the gifts in our family at Christmas time. An afternoon spent in a library is a special time for me. I will always be grateful to my teacher from Grades 1 through 7, who instilled in me a fascination with the written word..... and I'll always be grateful to my father, who gifted me with an impish sense of humor. I put both to use here. I have to admit I had a bit of fun fashioning this book, naming it and giving the author an unlikely name. I hope you enjoy my little play on words!

Marie has just kindly pointed out to me I've posted this on Monday night instead of Tuesday night. Yikes! My daughter and grandson are visiting and things are a bit chaotic at my house. We have seen a wonderful collection of art envelopes this week, combined with loads of enthusiasm for this new form of art. As promised, we have selected three names at random and paired them with each of the Three Muses who will forward their envelopes upon receipt of postal addresses. These are JACKIE (Bev), NETTY (Ann) and EILA A (Marie).
So could Jackie, Netty and Eila send their “snail mail” addresses to us via email at any of the three addresses listed on the right hand side of this blog page. Ann is going away for two weeks on October 4 but will be able to send her envelope if she receives Netty’s postal address in time.

The Three Muses have just passed 400 followers in the past week. To celebrate, and express our appreciation to all the talented artists who participate in our challenges, we've decided to have a drawing at the conclusion of Marie's mail art challenge. We will draw three names at random, and each artist will receive a mail art envelope created by one of the muses. Which name gets whose envelope will also be determined at random. Be sure to enter the challenge this week and get your name in the hat! We wish we could present one to each and every one of you. You have made our little corner of the blog challenge world immensely fulfilling for each of us. There will be a bit of a time lag, as our Ann is going on a wee bit of a vacation until the last week of October. I have created my art envelope sample in vintage style but this is the MUSES CHALLENGE and ANYTHING GOES!! We know we are going to see many different "takes" on this theme and we can't wait to see what you have for us. Art envelopes are a great way of exchanging art and REAL MAIL with friends and they are great fun to make. The idea is to create a design for an envelope so don't worry about having to make an envelope. A digital or hand-made "mock-up" is all that is needed.

"One Is the Lonliest Number" is a song I've always liked. I've discovered, in my many years, there's a great difference between being alone and being lonely. While I've been a widow for many years, I've never considered myself lonely. The painting is by Frank Cardogan Cowper. Of course, my wheel is the spinning wheel, which goes along with the story my aunt told to me. The sight of an old abandoned building or vehicle leaves me wondering about it's story. Once this rusty old car was new, bright and shiny. Likely it was some young man's pride and joy. He might have courted his favorite girl in it, and later they might have taken their children for afternoon drives. Now it sits here in a rural field, the prairie winds skipping dust devils through it's empty windows, stirring its secret memories. How I wish it could tell its story! I can't wait to see the rusty wonders you all bring to the challenge this week!

The Three Muses Challenge - Steampunk

This is a true story. Well, it could be true. Perhaps. Maybe.

This week’s theme is STEAMPUNK. When the Industrial Revolution began in the late 1700’s, a noblewoman, The Grand Duchess of Schteamponk, became interested in the great changes taking place, so much so that she surrounded herself with the new machinery pieces and revelled in the progress. She became known as a champion of the revolution and the word “Steampunk” was adopted to ensure that she would not be forgotten.

The Duchess would be honoured to think that, in the year 2010, her name is still remembered and recorded in your art pieces.

I have chosen “Eleanor Rigby” which is a touching study of loneliness.

A slightly sombre subject but I am sure there will be an avalanche of beautiful, cheerful takes on this theme to make up for it!!

It hardly seems possible, but it's a year since we three muses bravely decided to co-host a blog challenge. Our criteria were simple,--any and all art forms would be welcome, a sneak peek would be offered to give artists time to plan their entries, we would share the duty of posting challenges; and lastly (and we felt most important), we would take the time to acknowledge entries and leave comments for artists who generously shared their talent with us, and encourage them to support their fellow artists. In our wildest dreams, we did not imagine that in one short year well over 200 artists would have participated in our challenges, and weekly participation hover at the 50 mark! The quality of art that appears each week is truly remarkable. We feel it's an inspiration to everyone who participates. Thank you all!

As our anniversary approached, we discussed what we might do to mark the occasion. We arrived at the conclusion to keep it simple, as we've kept our challenge blog, and simply offer our heartfelt THANK YOU to each and every one of you who have so generously shared your talents with us. We're honored to be a part of the blog challenge community.
